How to Play Cornhole: Your Complete Guide

Cornhole is making waves in the world of sports. 2018’s American Cornhole League Pro Invitational was watched by an astounding half a million people — the most ever. Its ‘shot of the year,’ shared by Barstool Sports, got a whopping 1.2 million views in eight hours. Are you wondering how to play cornhole?

If not, maybe you should be. Cody Henderson, the top-ranked player in the American Cornhole League (ACL), brought home almost $25,000 in prize money last year. It’s safe to say this game isn’t only for tailgating parties anymore.

Regardless of your intent — making money or just collecting some bragging rights — it’s a fun time. Here are the rules of the game.

Cornhole Equipment

Cornhole can be played by 2 people or four. You’ll need two cornhole boards, 2′ wide x 4′ long with a 6-inch hole.

You’ll also need at least four bags or eight if you’re playing with four people (four bags per team). Each bag should be 6″ x 6 ” with 1 pound of corn in each.

There’s where that name comes from!

How to Play Cornhole

Find a flat surface and set the boards up facing each other. From front to front, there should be a 27-foot gap.

The adjacent space next to the board will be where the players stand. They can’t throw from any space behind the board. Their playing area should also stay limited to 2′ wide, or the space of the board.

Toss a coin to see who starts. A player from each team will alternate throws until all the bags are gone. For the next round, the winner of the previous round goes first.

For two-person teams, the player will start on one side of the board. For their next round, they’ll walk to the opposite board and alternate sides. So, if they started right, their next round will start on the left side.

For four-person teams, you’ll stay put on one side. Your partner will throw from the space directly across from you.

If a player crosses the foot line, that’s a foul. Likewise, if they throw their bag out of turn.

Cornhole Scoring

The goal is to see who scores 21 points first.

If your bag makes it in the hole, that’s 3 points.

A bag that lands on the board hangs from the board, or hangs from the edge without touching the ground, garners 1 point. If a bag is touching the ground, or can’t stay supported without another cornhole bag, that gets no points.

A player from the opposite team can knock your bag off and take your points away—and you can do the same. You can even knock your own bag off by accident, so toss with care!

Cornhole scoring works by canceling out. If one team scores 3 points, and the other team scores four, those 3 points cancel out—leaving the winner of that round with one point. You’ll play this way until one team has 21 or more points.

And then you’ve got your winner!
